The Charitable Trust, established in 1977, has, through the generosity and enthusiasm of Liverymen, accumulated considerable charitable funds. Invested and managed on a day to day basis by Schroders, the Trust is administered by members of the Court as appointed Trustees and advised by the Charitable Board.

At least fifty percent of the proceeds from fundraising events, regular donations and bequests from the Livery and from investment income is given in grants to a number of charitable causes selected by the Trustees, the remainder going to reserves to build further investment income. In reality the proportion given far exceeds this level and in 2013, for the first time, the Trust gave over £100,000 to worthy causes.

In particular there are a number of areas where the Trust's money is spent:

  • The Chartered Surveyors Training Trust (CSTT) has become the flagship beneficiary of the Trust with a significant commitment of £50,000 pa currently being paid to support the growth of apprenticeships in surveying.

  • The education initiative is funded from the Trust with all the support and mentoring provided by the work of the Education Committee.

  • In addition to the general support of our four London Schools we have for a number of years supported a music initiative at Archbishop Tenison.

  • Each year the Trust offers bursaries to a student from each of the supported schools going on to study at university and where personal circumstances may mean without this help they are unable to go.

  • Funds are allocated each year to the Guildhall School of Music both to sponsor a competition and support a bursary.

  • asadThe Trust also supports two bursaries at the Central School of Ballet for final year students nominated by the school.

  • Donations are also made each year to the Lord Mayor's appeal, in turn supporting a wider range of charities, and also to Ironbridge Gorge where the Company has had a close association over the years and in particular in supporting the renovation of the historic estate office.

  • Ad hoc requests for support are received throughout the year and considered by the board with smaller donations often being made to a variety of causes.

  • The Trust also provides support in the form of prizes and donations to our military affiliates from the branches of the three armed services and the Sea Cadets – see Links with the Armed Forces.

Although the Company's reserves are in good health we recognise the resources are still modest compared to some Companies and seek to support causes and charities where we can make a difference and close to our Livery heart of education, City and Mayoralty.
